Moka City is located in the southeastern part of Tochigi Prefecture, covering an area of approximately 167.34 square kilometers. It borders Utsunomiya City, Haga Town, and Ichikai Town to the north, Mashiko Town to the east, Chikusei City and Sakuragawa City to the south, and Shimotsuke City and Kaminokawa Town to the west. The population is about 77,000, with approximately 30,000 households (as of October 2023).
Lying at the northern edge of the Kanto Plain, the city features the Kinu River Lowland, Moka Lowland, and Gogyō River Lowland to the west, with the Kinu River flowing through the western part, while the Yatsugatake Mountains extend to the east. The average temperature is 13.5°C, with snowfall that rarely accumulates, making it a relatively comfortable area throughout the year. There are various theories regarding the origin of the place name, but one suggests it comes from “Maioka,” meaning “hill where cranes dance,” referring to the area once known as “Dai-machi,” which was covered with marshes and home to many waterfowl.
The history of Moka City flourished as a production area for Moka cotton during the Edo period. One of Moka City’s famous festivals is ‘ Moka Summer Festival ‘. The highlight is the “Moka Summer Festival Fireworks Festival,” featuring about 20,000 fireworks, making it a major event that attracts many spectators from both inside and outside the city.
The Moka Railway runs through Moka City, connecting Shimodate Station in Chikusei City to Motegi Station in Motegi Town, with six stations: “Moka Station,” “Kitamoka Station,” “Nishida Station,” “Kitayama Station,” “Kugedat Station,” and “Teranai Station.”
The main roads passing through Moka City include National Route 121, which crosses the city from east to west in the northern part, National Route 294, which connects Mashiko Town to Chikusei City, and National Route 408, which links Utsunomiya City to Moka City. The North Kanto Expressway also runs through Moka City, allowing access from Moka IC to Kanagawa Prefecture and Ibaraki Prefecture. Moreover, the Kanto Bus operates local bus routes within Moka City. The Moka City Community Bus, ‘ Ichigo Bus ‘, also provides service to major facilities in the city.

The parking lot is spacious, ensuring comfortable access by car. Michi no Eki Ninomiya is a beautifully renovated roadside station located a 13-minute walk from Higuchi Station on the Moka Railway, having been updated in 2020. It offers local specialties such as strawberry sweets and snacks made from “Tochi Otome,” along with fresh vegetables and side dishes available for purchase. In addition, there are about 13 supermarkets in the city, primarily focusing on stores like Torisen and Ohtani.
